Košice-based start-up SAFTRA BioMAI awarded for biomedical innovation

SAFTRA BioMAI, a start-up of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice, played a key role in the award-winning biomedical project that received the Technology Transfer Award in Slovakia 2021 in the category “Innovation of Slovakia 2021.” This project focuses on developing a non-invasive diagnostic test based on microRNA, which enables the prediction of success in the in vitro fertilization (IVF) process and the assessment of embryo quality. The innovative method was developed in collaboration with several institutions, including the Institute of Medical and Clinical Biochemistry at the Faculty of Medicine, UPJŠ; the Gynecology and Obstetrics Clinic of the Faculty of Medicine, UPJŠ; L. Pasteur University Hospital Košice; the Assisted Reproduction Center Gyncare a.s.; the Department of Microbiology and Virology at the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Comenius University in Bratislava; and the Central European Institute of Technology (CEITEC) at Masaryk University in Brno. The result of this collaboration is the international patent application PC/SK2021/050004, which describes a method for non-invasive testing of IVF success. SAFTRA BioMAI, as a technological partner, contributed to the development of this method with its expert knowledge in biomedical research. This achievement underscores the importance of collaboration between academic institutions and technology companies in developing innovations that can have a real impact on improving healthcare and the quality of life for patients.
